Ranching in Oregon
Eastern Oregon holds the state's ranching country: high desert basins, wet meadow, juniper range and canyon grazing between dryland wheat ground. Flood-irrigated meadow hay is what carries cattle through winter across much of the region.
Water allocation has been contested in parts of the state, so current water status is verified rather than assumed. A review also looks at the split between irrigated and dry ground, since the two carry very different capacity and very different holding costs.
