Times, program status, inspection position, damage history and the integrity of the logbooks determine what is possible, and title on an aircraft rarely looks the way an owner assumes. The process is deliberate and private, and nothing is accepted until the required review is complete and a written acceptance is issued.
What we review in this category
A discreet process
Aircraft conversations are usually private ones, often initiated by an adviser rather than the owner. Inquiries are handled by a small review group, and information is shared only with the professionals engaged on that specific matter. Nothing is publicized, and no aircraft is discussed publicly at any stage.
Aviation counsel and title
Aircraft title does not work like real estate title. FAA registration records, international registry interests, owner-trust structures and recorded security interests are examined by aviation counsel and a title company, and all title questions are subject to counsel rather than to any statement made here.
Maintenance and records review
Enrollment status on an engine or airframe program, transferability of that program, time remaining to the next major inspection, airworthiness directive compliance and the integrity of the logbooks drive both marketability and the cost of holding the aircraft. Records review generally precedes any substantive discussion of disposition.
Insurance, operator and possession
Who currently operates the aircraft, under what agreement, and who carries the insurance all matter during review. Hull and liability coverage must remain in force throughout, and the parties responsible for it are identified in writing before anything moves.
Disposition partners
If a gift is accepted, disposition may involve brokers, escrow agents, ferry pilots, maintenance facilities and storage providers. Those relationships are arranged for a specific accepted aircraft; no outcome, buyer, price or timeline is promised.
Carrying cost continues
Hangar, insurance, program payments, crew and required maintenance continue for every week the aircraft sits. Review acknowledges that openly, which is why records are requested early and why an honest early decline is better for an owner than a long, hopeful process.
Information the review requires
- Manufacturer, model, year and serial number.
- Registration mark and the registered owner of record.
- Airframe total time, plus engine and APU times and cycles.
- Maintenance program enrollment and whether it is current and transferable.
- Inspection status and the next major inspection or overhaul due.
- Damage history, corrosion findings and any incident record.
- Logbook availability and completeness, including any gaps.
- Liens, security interests, lease obligations and the operator in possession.
- Home airport, hangar arrangement and monthly carrying cost.
- Your own estimate of value, with any recent appraisal noted as a document.
